The Sachtleben method provides permanent and reliable protection for intellectual property and can only be detected using special analytical procedures. Sachtleben says that the technology has been developed to stem worldwide losses from product piracy, which is currently estimated at €300 billion and rising. These particles are suitable for use at the highest (forensic) security level.
According to Sachtleben, the concept comprises the physical marking substance in pure, isolated form, or incorporated and concealed in an additive, the functionality of which is also needed in the material. In addition, the related analytical services are required. The company believes that there are many potential applications for these new security particles in the plastics industry, as well as in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, security papers, textiles, printing inks, and components relevant to the safety of aircraft, for example. The particles are also approved (Kosher/Halal) for use in and in contact with foodstuffs. The marked products can then be unequivocally identified and are not susceptible to manipulation. Finding products that do not include this hidden security code enables patent-holders and manufacturers to take rapid action against product pirates, with a high probability of legal success.
The Sachtleben security particles can be individually adapted to customers' requirements for use, directly as an additive, for example, or integrated into compounds and masterbatches. The security particles are chemically and thermally stable, and low loadings of less than one per cent of the total formulation are required. They are unaffected by processing stages, such as extrusion. Although special sophisticated analysis is necessary for detection of the marking substance, Sachtleben is cooperating with external service-providers to offer the necessary analytical services. However, the user does not always need to have this complex analysis performed for checking after production. Following a training course, checking after production can be performed easily and reliably using the producer's own analytical methods. External analysis is vital only for the purpose of providing conclusive proof and in case of loss or damage. The analytical results obtained are dependable, and can be presented as reliable evidence in court proceedings, for example.
For security reasons, neither the chemical basis nor any further product details can be revealed. This information will be recorded and covered by secrecy agreements. The production, storage and distribution of these new security particles at Sachtleben's plant in Duisburg, Germany are also conducted under the most strictly controlled, supervised and documented conditions.
