Kisuma Chemicals expands capacity

Kisuma Chemicals is adding a fourth line for the production of speciality magnesium compounds at its Veendam plant in the Netherlands.

The line will be constructed in two phases with a total cost of Euro 50 million. The first phase will increase capacity by 5000 tonnes and will be completed by the end of 2007. The second phase is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.

The capacity of the plant will be around 30,000 tonnes per year once the expansion is complete. Around 20,000 tonnes is for the production of Alcamizer®, which are synthetic hydrotalcites used in non-lead PVC heat stabilizers. Demand for these and other hydrotalcite products has increased following the voluntary agreement of the PVC producing and processing industry in the European Union in 2000 to eliminate the use of lead-containing stabilizers by 2015.

Other products produced at the Veendam plant include DHT-4, a halogen scavenger for polyolefins, and Kisuma 5®, a synthetic magnesium hydroxide used as a flame retardant in non-halogen wire and cables and as a smoke suppressor in rigid PVC.
