New resin provides benefits to automotive and appliance industries

9 March 2006

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP has expanded its Ryton? polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) product portfolio by adding a new resin grade that provides superior hydrolytic stability over comparable glass and mineral fills. Ryton? PPS R-7-220 is a 65% glass and mineral filled PPS compound developed for use in applications requiring constant or repeated exposure to high-temperature water and aggressive automotive fluids.

The company adds that the superior hydrolytic stability of Ryton? PPS R-7-220 results from the use of a proprietary fiberglass and other agents that enhance adhesion to the PPS polymer. The adhesion package is suited to withstand the high-processing temperatures of PPS, therefore minimizing the potential to generate gases, which coat moulds and plug vents.

The company also claims that Ryton? PPS R-7-220 possesses other important mechanical properties. In a test, Ryton? PPS R-7-220 produced an ultimate tensile strength of 173 MPa and an ultimate flexural strength of 240 MPa. The product retains over 80% of these properties after 2000 hours of exposure to 140?C automotive long-life coolant.
