Nanoparticles offer polymer reinforcement
Sachtleben Chemie GmbH has developed nanoparticles based on synthetic barium sulphate, which are said to open up a range of diverse new potential applications for thermoplastics. Sachtleben's Sachtoperse line is currently the industry's finest-sized barium sulphate system, with a particle size of less than 100nm. Due to its large specific surface area (>25m²/g), this product is ideal for polymer reinforcement, says the company. Ultrafine systems based on barium sulphate are renowned for their chemical inertness, insensitivity to temperature, high transparency and good dispersibility, and that they allow control of their rate and degree of crystallization in the polymer. Mechanical and optical product properties, and also process parameters such as cooling rates, can be adjusted accurately, easily and effectively.
