New masterbatch permits large colour shift effects

New custom-formulated concentrates from Teknor Color Company are enabling manufacturers of packaging for beauty products to achieve dramatic colour-shift effects that create a lustrous, active presence on the retail shelf, claims the company.

Teknor Color explains that ColorMorph™ concentrates, made possible by new types of raw materials and innovations in manufacture, yield far more distinct colour shifts as the viewing angle changes than are available with conventional ‘colour-variable’ concentrates. Instead of the often subtle effects achievable up to now, ColorMorph concentrates make possible packaging whose colours may well travel from one end of the spectrum to the other as shoppers move along the retail shelf.

For example, the special effects include a concentrate that can change from gold to bright red. In addition, by specially orienting the colour in thin PET sheet such as that used for clear boxes, it is possible to produce a box that is both opaque (with printing visible), and transparent (with contents visible), depending on viewing angle.
